How to Build Wall Shelves

Building a wall shelf is a great way to enhance and freshen up your space. It is also the answer if you want to make some changes to your bedroom, kitchen, or bathroom.

Let’s have a look at how to do it:

1- Measure your workspace:

· It is the first thing you have to do to decide on the number and size of your materials. Find out how many shelves you would need and how much the gap between each of them should be.

· Have the necessary number of shelves and brackets (two boards for each shelf). If you have enough space, you might think of having deeper shelves to bring some depth to your living area.

· Measure space for each shelf as your work area might be uneven at different parts.

2- Prepare the boards:

· Once you get enough wood, cut them to the size you need. Check the cut boards on the wall to see if they fit in the location. Labeling their exact location at this point might help you with keeping track of them later.

· After cutting the wood and checking if it fits the wall, sand it with the help of an orbital sander. Wipe it, apply the finish, choose your color, and paint it! If you decide not to paint it, you can use stain and tung oil to protect its natural look. Then leave everything to dry.

· The boards have dried and they are ready to be attached to the wall. You have already decided on the number of shelves and the gap between them. Measuring from the floor up to the point where you will locate the bottom shelf, mark that location. Do this for the next shelves as well. Don’t forget to consider the width of the shelves while measuring!

3- Install the brackets:

· Place the first bracket on the wall and check if the board is level. If you nail the board before fixing the second bracket, you can ensure that the shelf is level and install the second bracket in the correct location. Otherwise, some problems might arise as the floor is sometimes unlevel. Repeat these steps for the next shelves as well. Install all the brackets.

· Cover the nail holes on the brackets with the help of spackling paste. When it dries, sand it smooth and apply the paint.

4- Install the shelves:

· As the final step, place the shelves between the walls onto the brackets. Nail the shelves to the brackets to make sure they are secure. Be careful about the location of the last nails in the brackets.
